The tokens of peasants, warriors, ships and siege engines that can move around the map and can participate in battles are called
units.
Military units are able to destroy an enemy during the
battle. They are all of the basic units except
peasants.
There are 8 types of basic units that are divided into 4 classes: infantry, cavalry, siege engines and vessels. Another characteristic is unit attack class: melee, ranged and projectile.
Infantry are soldiers on foot, usually with low speed and comparatively low cost. Infantry is the backbone of a medieval army.
There are three basic infantry units - spearmen, swordsmen and archers. Peasants are not a military unit, but also belong to infantry.
Cavalry are formidable warriors, usually more expensive than infantry, with higher speed and better combat characteristics. Cavalry are warriors that could be mounted on horseback, camels or elephants.
Cavalrymen are the basic unit of cavalry in the game.
Vessels are ships that move only on water hexes and participate in naval battles. Ships can also attack units and structures on land.
Vessels can transport land units across water hexes.
Galleys are the basic unit of vessels in the game.
Siege engines are machines for destroying the enemy. They are quite expensive, but also effective; they have a low speed but excellent combat performance, which allows them to inflict maximum damage on enemy units and structures.
There are two basic siege engine units - catapult and trebuchet.
Melee attack - the unit can attack an enemy located right on the adjacent hex. In the context of the game, these are warriors who use melee weapons in combat: swords, spears, war hammers, etc.
Ranged attack - the unit can attack not only an adjacent enemy, but also enemies within its range up a couple of hexes away. These are warriors using bows, crossbows, slings and other ranged weapons.
Projectile attack - the unit can attack an enemy within its attack range, like a ranged unit, but uses massive projectiles rather than arrows or bolts. In the context of the game, these are siege engines that throw stones or fire bombs, etc.
Also there are other stats defined for each unit:
Movement points are the number of hexes the unit can move on the map. Typically, one movement point allows you to move one hex. This number can be found next to the unit class.
Strength is the basic feature of a unit that defines its effectiveness in battle. Strength is featured as a number near a symbol of unit attack class that indicates the number of cubes to be added to the bag during a battle. It can be either
attack cubes that are able to cause damage to an enemy, or
defense cubes that lower the chances to take damage. All basic units have the strength = 1.
Strength bonus is the boost in combat performance against a particular unit class. It is expressed in additional attack cubes or defense cubes that are added to the bag during the
battle. The example on the left illustrates the strength bonuses: +2
against siege engines, +3
against ranged infantry.
Hit points is how much damage the object can take until destroyed.
Attack range is the attack radius of the ranged and projectile attack unit. In this example, the unit can attack the enemy on the adjacent hex and the one following it.
All objects that can be attacked by a unit, are within the attack range of this unit.
