Units
Are Peasants an army?
No. If only Peasants are on a hex, they form a Peasant group and are not considered an army.
Are Peasants considered part of an army?
Yes. If at least one military unit is on a hex together with Peasants, all units on that hex, including Peasants, form an army.
Do Peasants increase army size?
Yes. However, Peasants cannot be active units of an army.
Can a Peasant carry a Relic?
No. Only military units can pick up and carry Relics. If a military unit carrying a Relic is destroyed, the Relic stays on that hex.
My army has 3 Spearmen attacking 2 Cavalrymen. Do all three Spearmen get the +2 strength bonus vs cavalry?
No. Only a single unit's strength bonus applies per battle. You choose one Spearman's +2 bonus vs cavalry, not three. This is true for all strength bonuses against unit types.
Can a Peasant group explore a Province?
No. Exploration requires an army, which means at least one military unit. A group of only Peasants cannot explore.
Maneuver
My army marched (+1 exhaustion) and then joined an already exhausted group. How many exhaustion cubes end up on that hex?
The existing count plus 2 more. You add 1 for performing the maneuver and 1 for the march. So if there was already 1 exhaustion cube, the hex now has 3. If there were already 2 — now 4, and so on. Remember that each exhaustion cube after the first gives -1 to the strength bonus. Also, this combined force cannot initiate battle or overcome adversities this round.
On the Technology grid, are diagonal cells considered adjacent?
No. By default, only orthogonal (horizontal/vertical) cells are considered adjacent. Diagonal cells are not adjacent and cannot be reached in a single step unless a card ability says otherwise.
Can I use a Ferry and then attack in the same maneuver?
Yes. Ferrying is part of the maneuver. If your land unit lands on a hex without an exhaustion cube and has an enemy target within range, it can initiate a battle as normal.
Battle
An army (Trebuchet, 3 Archers) attacks a City with 1 Swordsman unit. What is the probability of destroying this City?
45.45%. The probability of destroying such a City equals the probability of dealing 4 damage during battle: 1 damage to destroy the Swordsman unit, and 3 damage to destroy the City itself.
The attacker's army consists of 4 military units, plus a Siege Engine with the projectile attack type, which increases courage by +1. Thus, the attacker can draw a maximum of 5 cubes from the bag, of which at least 4 must be their color.
The attacker has 8 cubes in the bag (4 units and the Trebuchet's strength bonus); the defender has 3 cubes (the unit, its bonus, and the City garrison bonus). Therefore, using the hypergeometric distribution formula, the probability that the attacker, who has 8 cubes in a bag of 11 total, will draw at least 4 cubes of their color equals approximately 45.45%.
The bag has 10 of my cubes and 4 enemy ones. When drawing 5 cubes, I need to get 4 or more of mine. How does the probability change if I add 1 of my cubes to the bag?
Probability increases by 5% (from 0.54 to 0.59). Adding one of your cubes increases the overall success probability. This also reduces the probability of drawing enemy cubes.
The bag has 10 of my cubes and 4 enemy ones. When drawing 5 cubes, I need to get 4 or more of mine. How does the probability change if I draw 1 more cube?
Probability increases by 28.5% (from 0.54 to 0.825). Drawing an additional cube significantly increases success chances, but also increases the probability of drawing enemy cubes.
Is a rebel considered an enemy army?
Yes. A rebel is considered an enemy army regardless of unit color.
Is a rebel considered a foreign army?
No. A rebel is not a foreign army, as it does not belong to any other player.
If I attacked an enemy army of one unit and converted it to mine, does this count as destroying an enemy unit?
No. You did not destroy the enemy unit, but you destroyed the enemy army. If no objects belonging to your opponent remain on the hex with this army, then you won the battle.
What to do with an exhaustion cube if the last unit on a hex was destroyed?
Discard the exhaustion cube(s). Exhaustion cubes reflect the state of units. If there are no units on a hex, there is no state.
Does it count as destroying a unit if it was converted or recovered?
No. Destroying a unit does not occur in case of its conversion or recovery. However, if this was the last enemy unit on the hex, it means you won this battle.
Can an Elite Unit be converted?
No. During conversion you can discard any enemy unit of your choice "except an Elite Unit". Elite Units are immune to conversion.
If I destroy an enemy City, does the opponent lose the extra action cube they gained from building it?
Yes. When a City or Castle is destroyed, the owner returns 1 action cube to the supply. They'll receive fewer cubes during the cleanup phase as well, since the formula is based on Cities and Castles on the map.
Archers attack Swordsmen from 2 hexes away. The Swordsmen can't reach back. What cubes do they add to the bag?
Only defense (white) cubes. Since the Swordsmen are out of melee range, they are inactive and contribute only white cubes — both for their base strength and any applicable strength bonus. White cubes cause no damage when drawn.
Archers attack Cavalrymen from 2 hexes away. The Cavalrymen have +1 strength bonus vs infantry. Is this bonus added as a colored (attack) cube?
No. Since the Cavalrymen are inactive (they cannot reach the Archers), all their cubes — including the strength bonus — are added as white defense cubes. Only active units contribute colored attack cubes.
Archers attack Swordsmen from range. The Swordsmen are inactive and only add white cubes. Can the defender still add colored action, experience, or voting cubes voluntarily? And if those are drawn — do they damage the Archers?
Yes and yes. The defender can always add voluntary colored cubes to the bag, regardless of whether their units are active or not. If the attacker draws any of those colored cubes, they deal damage as normal. Thematically, these cubes represent unexpected resistance: sabotage, guerrilla raids, or other desperate measures that don't require the main force to be in striking range.
Swordsmen attack a Peasant group. Can the defender add colored cubes voluntarily even though Peasants are non-military?
Yes. The defender can add their action, experience, and/or voting cubes to the bag even when defending with Peasants only. If drawn, those colored cubes deal damage to the attacking Swordsmen as normal.
A Galley attacks Swordsmen from an adjacent sea hex. What cubes do the Swordsmen add to the bag?
Only defense (white) cubes. Melee units can only attack targets on adjacent land hexes. A Galley is on a sea hex, so the Swordsmen are inactive and all their cubes — including any strength bonuses — are added as white defense cubes.
Does the strength bonus "vs structures" apply when attacking an empty City (no defending units)?
Yes. Moreover, if the defender adds no cubes to the bag, you may use Quick Battle and skip bag preparation entirely. In that case, deal damage equal to your army's total courage.
My opponent destroyed one of my Buildings. Can I place the token on a different area of my player mat?
Yes. All Building tokens on the map are identical — there is no way to tell a Forge from a Barracks by looking at the map. The types you own are determined solely by empty slots on your player mat. So when a Building is destroyed, you return the token to whichever area you choose.
Religion
Is a province without religion considered a foreign religious community?
No. If a province has no religion token, it is considered to have no religious community.
Is a province with your religion that has heresy considered your religious community?
No. If heresy appears in your religious community, you lose control over it. It is also not considered a foreign religious community, as it is not controlled by any other player.
Is a religious community considered yours if it is in a province you do not control, and another player is the Spiritual Leader of your shared religion?
No. Such a religious community is considered foreign, as you do not control it, even though it practices your religion.
I changed religion. What happens to my old religious communities on the map?
They stay on the map, but you lose control of them. Only religion tokens from your starting province are discarded. Your old communities in other provinces remain and may be controlled by another player who shares that religion, based on the Spiritual Leader priority.
Can I spread religion to a province I don't control?
Yes. You can spread to any province adjacent to one with your religious community under your control. You don't need to control the target province. However, if an opponent controls it, they add cubes to the bag during Bag Preparation.
My opponent has a religious community in my province. Does that affect my income?
Yes. During the achievement phase, a province with a foreign religious community or relic gives you only 6 coins instead of 8, and no Glory. Meanwhile, the opponent gains 1 Glory and 2 coins from that community.
Technologies
What does the construction "as a free action, you may perform..." mean?
You may perform the described action, paying the full cost without using action cubes. A free action allows you to perform an action so that it does not consume one of your limited action cubes.
If a technology specifies to perform something as a free action that normally designates a main action, do I need to place an action cube?
No. When performing free actions, action cubes are not used. However, adopting a technology involves converting an action cube into an affiliation cube. Therefore, if you adopt a technology as a free action, take this cube from the supply.
During cleanup, I retrieve all action cubes "except 1 from the technology grid". What if I have 5 cubes on the grid from multiple researches?
Leave exactly 1 cube, take the rest back. Regardless of how many cubes you accumulated on the grid during the round, you always leave exactly 1 to mark your position and retrieve all others.
Can I adopt a technology from my ally?
Yes. "Foreign" includes your ally. You pay the normal cost plus the 2 mead adoption fee, same as with any other player. Your ally's consent is not required.
Adversities
Can I attack my own rebel instead of overcoming it?
Yes. A rebel is an enemy army, so you can attack it in a battle. The black cubes act as the rebel's attack cubes and deals damage back. Keep in mind that destroying a rebel through battle grants no Glory, unlike overcoming it.
Is a rebel Peasant considered an army?
Yes. Normally, Peasants are non-military and a group of them is just a Peasant group. However, a rebel is always an enemy army, even if the underlying unit is a Peasant. Its black cube is added to the bag during battle and can deal damage to your units.
If I get heresy in multiple provinces, do I need to overcome each one separately?
No. When overcoming heresy, you discard black cubes from all religious communities of your religion across all provinces at once. This even includes heresy in provinces you don't control.
A Building on my hex has 1 black cube (damage). Does it still function?
Yes. Damaged structures function normally. The only effect of damage is reduced hit points. A Building with 1 damage has 0 remaining hit points, meaning it will be destroyed instantly if anyone attacks it — no additional damage is needed.
My City took 2 damage from adversities. Does that affect my control over the province?
It can. A damaged City has fewer hit points, and hit points equal influence. An undamaged City contributes 3 influence; with 2 damage it only contributes 1. If an opponent has equal or higher influence, you may lose control.
Achievements
I meet the conditions for my secret achievement, but acquiring it (and revealing) would help my opponent more than me. Can I skip it?
Yes. Acquiring an achievement is always optional. You are never forced to acquire it, even if you meet all the requirements.
I already have a cube on a military achievement card. Can I acquire an achievement from a different military card?
No. You cannot acquire achievements from more than one card of the same class. Once you place a cube on a card, all other cards of that class are closed to you.
Can I acquire 2 instant achievements in one turn?
No. You can only acquire 1 instant achievement per turn. If you need multiple instant achievements (for example, to reach 4 stars for an instant victory), you must spread them across separate turns.
A card says I "cannot recruit cavalry". Can I still gain a Cavalryman through another effect (like an event effect)?
Yes. "Cannot recruit" specifically restricts the recruit action. Gaining a unit through other effects is a different mechanic. However, "cannot" is the highest-priority restriction for the action it targets.
Other
If at the start of my turn I have no action cubes, does this always mean I must pass?
No. The main requirement is that during your turn you can perform a main action. Some nation abilities allow you to perform a main action using experience cubes or other resources.
After I pass, can I still perform free actions like maneuver or activate?
No. Once you pass, you cannot perform any further main actions or free actions this round. Plan your activations and maneuvers before passing.
Can I produce goods and sell them on the same turn?
Not by default. On each turn you can only perform one type of main action. If you chose produce, you can produce multiple times, but you cannot also trade on that same turn. You would need to wait until your next turn to trade. However, if a nation ability or technology lets you trade as a free action, then you could produce as a main action and sell as a free action on the same turn.
I built a City on a forest hex. Can I still gather wood from that hex?
No. A City token covers the hex completely and the hex is now treated as City terrain. It no longer has the original terrain type, so it doesn't produce any resource.
I have the most influence in a province, but no City or Castle there. Do I control it?
No. Province control requires both: a City or Castle in the province and more influence than any other player. Neither condition alone is enough.
My opponent's relic is in a province I control. Does it affect me?
Yes. A foreign relic in your province works similarly to a foreign religious community: it reduces your income during the achievement phase (6 coins instead of 8, no Glory). Additionally, the relic is considered active and grants bonuses to its owner.
