From 1541 to 1650 CE, the Irish watched their world systematically dismantled — Henry VIII claiming a kingship his ancestors had never held, Elizabeth's armies breaking the great Gaelic lords one by one, Protestant planters seizing lands where Irish had lived since memory began. The Flight of the Earls emptied Ulster of its nobility; the 1641 rising drowned in Cromwellian vengeance. An ancient civilization became a conquered province.
