From 1356 to 1648 CE, the Teutons watched their crusading purpose crumble into territorial ambition — the Golden Bull had ignored them, Tannenberg broke their military legend, and Luther's Reformation delivered the final blow when their own Grand Master converted and secularized Prussia as a Protestant duchy. The remnant Order limped on as Habsburg pensioners, their white cloaks now merely ceremonial vestments of a forgotten holy war.
