From 1396 to 1650 CE, the Bulgarians vanished from history's stage — Nicopolis had sealed their fate, and for two and a half centuries no Bulgarian state existed, their people reduced to rayah under Ottoman rule. The Patriarchate was abolished, the nobility converted or fled, and only village priests and mountain monasteries kept the Cyrillic flame burning through the endless Ottoman night.
