1526-1606 CE

From 1526 to 1606 CE, the Hungarians learned the cost of Mohács — their king drowned fleeing the battlefield, their kingdom carved into three pieces, Habsburg and Ottoman and Transylvanian prince each claiming the crown of Saint Stephen. For eighty years the Long Turkish War bled what remained, fortress after fortress falling, until exhaustion forced a peace that merely ratified catastrophe.
