The chronicle covers the years between the fall of Rome and the dawn of the Renaissance, exactly when ethnogenesis was most visible in the historical record: Goths fragmenting into Visigoths and Ostrogoths, Vikings settling and reshaping themselves into Anglo-Saxons, Normans, and Rusyns, steppe peoples assimilating with the lands they conquered until they were no longer steppe peoples at all.
You do not pick a finished civilization at the start; you grow one out of the choices you actually make at the table, and at the dawn of each new age you choose your successor from a constrained list printed on the very card you played before. Vikings can become several things, but they cannot become Mongols. The paths reflect actual patterns of migration and cultural fusion, not a freeform menu.
When you evolve, the new card overlays the old rather than replacing it, so some abilities fade while others persist. With more than 160 nation cards across three ages, the people you finish a campaign with are rarely the people you started it with.
